In September 2008 a new curriculum came into force setting out standards for learning, development and care for children aged birth to five. All childcare providers and primary schools now need to make sure that they are meeting these standards when working with young children. The Early Years Foundation Stage framework (EYFS) has four main themes:

  • A Unique Child
  • Positive Relationships
  • Enabling Environments
  • Learning and Development

Each of these four themes has four Commitments, or ways of putting the standards into practice. Free play with a treasure basket can meet fourteen out of sixteen of these Commitments.

The last theme, Learning and Development, is broken down into 6 areas of Learning and Development:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

Playing with a Playscope or Playscope 4 Parents Treasure Basket and Activity Cards can meet all of these curriculum areas. Our new Problem Solving and Numeracy Cards are specifically tailored to this curriculum area.

A clear key to the Learning and Development areas of the EYFS is provided with every set of Playscope Activity Cards, click here to see an example.
